Even Seasoned Pros Get Caught! 4 Moves That Shorten Forklift Lifespan (No. 3 Might Be Your Daily Habit)

At SECSUN Machinery, we know forklifts are the backbone of efficient warehouse operations. But even experienced operators can unknowingly sabotage their equipment’s lifespan through repetitive bad habits. Today, we’re breaking down 4 common actions that accelerate wear and tear – and the third one might surprise you!

    1. Overloading Beyond Capacity

Pushing forklifts beyond their rated capacity strains the hydraulic system, tires, and chassis. This not only risks tip-overs but also leads to costly repairs.

The Fix: Always check load limits (clearly marked on your forklift’s data plate) and distribute weight evenly.

    2. "Racing Mode" – Sharp Turns & Sudden Stops

Aggressive driving wears down tires prematurely and stresses brakes and transmission. Frequent jerky movements also loosen critical components over time.

The Fix: Encourage smooth acceleration, gradual braking, and wider turns to reduce mechanical stress.

    3. Ignoring Proper Shutdown Protocol

This is the silent killer! Leaving forks elevated or the engine idling during breaks seems harmless, but it causes unnecessary hydraulic pressure buildup and fuel waste. Worse, accidental bumps from raised forks can damage surroundings.

The Fix: Lower forks to the ground, engage the parking brake, and shut off the engine during downtime.

    4. Skipping Daily Inspections

Neglecting pre-shift checks (fluid levels, leaks, tire integrity) allows minor issues to escalate into major breakdowns. A frayed hydraulic hose ignored today could mean a $2,000 repair tomorrow.

The Fix: Implement a mandatory 5-minute inspection routine and log issues immediately.

Your forklifts are long-term investments – treat them right! At SECSUN, we provide durable, ergonomic forklifts designed for heavy-duty performance, but even the best equipment needs responsible operation.
